Before purchasing collars, harnesses, clothes or any other item that will be worn by your pet you need to know the correct size. It will be very disappointing to purchase an item for your pet then find out doesn’t fit. I want to help you avoid this by showing you how to correctly measure your pet.
How To Correctly Measure Your Pet for Collars and Clothing!
The only things you will need is a flexible tape measure, a treat for when your done and of course your pet! 🙂
How to Measure the Neck
Let’s start with measuring the neck. Take your tape measure and start at the base of the neck then go all the way around (the circumference of) your pet’s neck. Leave enough room to fit two fingers under the measuring tape. Never put anything around your pet neck that is too tight, you should always be able to fit at least two fingers under the collar. You will need to pay close attention to this if you have a growing puppy or kitten.
Special note for those pets that get short haircuts: Make sure to leave enough room for hair growth. A collar that fits when the hair is short will become tight as the hair grows back in.
How to Measure the Length
To get the proper length you will start to measure at the base of the neck to the base of the tail. This length will be needed when purchasing clothing. The typical clothing sizes are the length of your pet.
Example:
Most clothes come in even number sizes like 8, 10, 12 and so on. So if your pet is 9 inches long your best bet would be to go with a size 10.
How to Measure the Chest (Girth)
Start measuring at the base of the neck down to just behind the front legs and all the way back up and around (the circumference of) your pet’s chest. Make sure to leave some extra room for comfort. Some breeds tend to have larger chests so it is important to know the correct measurement.
Here are two typical size chart to help you understand how the sizing works.
